St. Johns Wort has been used as a tonic for anxiety, tension, insomnia, and as an anti-depressant, it can also help ease painful menstruation .

When taken by mouth St. John's wort is likely safe when used in doses up to 900 mg daily for up to 12 weeks. It can cause some side effects such as diarrhea, dizziness, restlessness, and skin tingling. St. John's wort interacts with many drugs. Let your healthcare provider know if you want to take St. John's wort.
St. John's wort is possibly unsafe when taken in large doses. It might cause severe skin reactions after sun exposure. Wear sun block outside, especially if you are light-skinned.
As always there are always several herbs that are effective with any problem. If you must take St. John s Wort, stay out of strong sunlight as it will cause even dark skin to burn.
